What is Fly ash Blocks?

Fly ash blocks are a building material, specifically masonry units, containing class C or class F fly ash and water. Compressed at 28 MPa and cured for 24 hours in a 66 °C steam bath, then toughened with an air entrainment agent, the bricks last for more than 100 freeze-thaw cycles.
In other word it is a masonry unit that is used in the construction of buildings. They are considered to be a part of good and affordable building materials. They contain Class C fly ash and water.

The best raw material ratio for fly ash bricks

1. Mixing Proportion for Fly Ash Bricks

·        Fly ash – 57 to 65%

·        River Sand or Stone dust – 18 to 27%

·        Hydrated Lime – 9 to 12 %Gypsum – 5%

This is the widely practiced mix proportion to make quality fly ash bricks. Hydrated lime is easily available and this is the most common method followed by many successful brick makers.

2. Mix Proportion for Bricks manufacturing using

·        Fly Ash (major part) – 55 to 60%

·        River Sand or Stone dust – 20 to 25%

·        Sludge Lime –15 to 22%

·        Gypsum – 5%

Sludge lime is a waste material and hence it costs less than hydrated lime. Sludge lime is normally wet and has lumps, However, it can be used to make quality fly ash bricks.

3. Mix Proportion for Fly ash Bricks manufacturing using cement      instead of gypsum and Lime

·        Fly Ash – 50 to 60%

·        River Sand or Stone Dust – 30 to 40%

·        Cement – 8 to 12%

In this Mix design, cement is used instead of gypsum and lime.

Cement is more expensive than Gypsum and Lime; hence this formula is useful only during non-availability of gypsum and lime.

Fly ash bricks are made by following process:

Fly ash reacts with lime in the presence of moisture to form calcium silicate hydrate which is the binder material. The raw mix is molded in the molding press/machine, pressed under a pressure into bricks. Then fly ash bricks are withdrawn from the molding machine and they are air dried under the sun and kept for 1 day.
